An Introduction to the Growers Program
Since 1955, Growers MIneral Solutions has helped farmers increase their profit by raising high quality crops with lower overall costs. This is accomplished by creating a superior rooting media and stimulating plants with smaller amounts of balanced nutrition(GMS) at stress points during the plants life. This is a farming philosophy known as "The Growers Program

1. Soils nearly saturated with calcium allow plants to use nutrients to there best advantage

2. Plants use nutrients in a readily available form in small quantities. Do not use too much, you can overdo easier than not getting enough.

3 Foliar sprays with nutritional materials are very efficient. Use at proper time under most favorable conditions

It has been found that the most productive soils in the world contain 80% to 85% of the exchangeable bases as calcium. This base exchange phenomena controls the ability of plant roots to grow and probe for water and nutrition.

Based on research by other agronomists of his time, Dr. Tiedjens, one of the founder of Growers Nutritional Solutions, saw the necessity to monitor the calcium level in soil in order to predict the productivity of the soil. The method of his time was to use PH As a way to monitor calcium levels. Through his experiences with vegetable farming in New Jersey, Dr. Tiedjens realized other materials such as sodium or potassium would influence the PH level of the soil regardless of the soils calcium level. He reasoned that on soils not receiving high levels of fertilization or manure that the ph might predict calcium needs; however in many cases its ability to predict the soils calcium needs would be very poor.

Using various technical publications and his years of field research, Dr. Tiedjens devised a test for determining appropriate soil calcium levels necessary for an ideal growing media to encourage optimum economical plant growth, health, and reproduction. To predict the calcium needs of the soil, he developed a specific exchangeable calcium test. This test was coordinated with the results of yield trials. This same test is used today by Growers Mineral Solutions to evaluate the calcium needs of soils.

Fertilizing Crops

After his exposure to the elite soil chemists of the world, Dr Tiedjens became a leader in the field of plant nutrition. His experience in hydroponics, his research for large corporations, and his director status at several USDA research facilities established Dr. Tiedjens as one of the leading plant nutrition specialists in the world.

More recent studies have shown that calcium is the police officer that regulates the flow of nutrients into and out of the plant protoplasm. Calcium plays a vital role in production of high quality crops.

As Dr. Tiedjens worked with farmers and their fertility problems, he realized that having a balanced soil was more important than the amount of fertilizer being applied. He defined “balanced” as a soil with 80% to 85% of the exchangeable bases as calcium with good physical properties.

By the end of WWII, Dr. Tiedjens had put together his program, which was composed of creating a superior rooting media and stimulating a plant with small amounts of clean, balanced nutrition at critical stress periods in the plants life. This combination of growing environment and fertilizer treatments came to be the Growers Program. It very simply could be adapted to any agricultural operation and created a very efficient crop from the standpoint of health and production.

The beginning of foliar nutrition of plants

With the advancement of nutrient technology during WWII, mineral elements became pure enough to place directly on the plant or on the seed. At the same time organic chemistry developed chemicals for crop production that were foliar sprayed into the environment to improve the crop’s yield

Using these scientific advancements, Dr. Tiedjens then completely bypassed the soil. Applying the liquid fertilizer directly on the plants led to even greater efficiency. This was the beginning of foliar nutrition of plants.

Early doubters suggested that the above ground portions of plants could not absorb fertility elements. However, the United States Atomic Energy Commission sponsored research using radioactive isotopes. Conducted at Michigan State University, scientific publications in the early to mid 50s reported on the research. The findings demonstrated that fertility elements applied as foliar sprays to plant leaves cold be absorbed into and utilized by plants.
